Job Title: Research Scientist


Meru is a fast paced, early-stage life sciences research tools company located in Richmond, Virginia.  We are commercializing an innovative platform for the measurement of biomolecular binding interactions in solution by compensated interferometry.  This highly sensitive, mass-independent, label-free technology will have a profound impact on our clients’ efforts in drug discovery, clinical diagnostics, and many other scientific applications.

How you will make an Impact?

As a Research Scientist, you will develop and commercialize our new technology which relies on label free detection and quantification of molecular interactions.  You will be responsible for communications to the Senior Leadership Team at Meru. You will direct your own research projects and be comfortable working under minimal supervision.  You will flourish in the dynamic trajectory and culture of a fast-paced start-up. 

What you will do?

  • Establish the laboratory, identify optimal best practices, and assist in recruitment and onboarding of new lab team members.

  • Lead instrument and assay development research leading to a commercialized product

  • Implement and actively participate in training and competency programs

  • Contribute to quality assurance initiatives

  • Coordinate daily workflows, and routinely review and present analytical results

  • Grow operational excellence in the laboratory

How will you get here?


Ph.D., Master’s Degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or engineering (chemical, biomedical) with 5+ yrs industry or post doc experience in assay development.  


  • Assay development and experimental design required

  • Entrepreneurial flexibility and experience in small company or start-up environment preferred

  • Outstanding analytical and execution skills

  • Small molecule drug discovery, ELISA, and ligand bind assay

Skills and Abilities

  • Interpretation of data and excellent communication skills including scientific presentations

  • Project management and organizational abilities

  • Innovative, entrepreneurial, collaborative, and strong motivation to succeed

  • Instrumentation experience, especially label -free technologies, a plus

  • Knowledge of quality assurance and proficiencies also desirable
